Fighting Poverty World Wide
The presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain is just moments away. Given the weak economic climate, there is very real concern that the presidential candidates may backtrack on the smart and historic commitments they’ve made to fight extreme poverty and global disease.
It’s up to us to make it clear that we want no debate about backing away from those promises. Click the link to sign the petition below and ask Barack Obama and John McCain to keep their commitments to fighting global poverty:

Senators John McCain and Barack Obama,
As you work to find a solution to the global financial crisis, please do not waver in your support for the world's poorest people. It is now more important than ever to stand up for effective, efficient solutions that save millions of lives, strengthen the global economy, and win the hearts and minds of people around the world. I’m keeping my commitment to fight global poverty, and I ask you to do the same.
Poverty-fighting programs make up less than one percent of the entire U.S. budget. Yet for that modest investment in the developing world, we’ve helped deliver life-saving AIDS medicine to 3 million people, been an important part of the effort to put 41 million children in school across the developing world, and hung anti-malarial bed nets across Africa. These efforts are saving millions of lives and helping the world’s poorest people break free from crippling poverty, and will be more important than ever as the effects of any global economic slowdown are sure to be magnified in already struggling countries.
If politicians don’t hear from us, their support for these issues could waver. That is why we are coming together as ONE—Democrats and Republicans, men and women, young and old, Americans from all walks of life – to form a powerful constituency that needs to be heard.
Add your name to our petition and remind John McCain and Barack Obama that, in these weeks before the election, we’ll be watching to make sure they keep their poverty-fighting commitments:

Helping our neighbors is what we do best; it defines us as Americans. In the last century, Americans rose from the depths of the great depression to keep the flame of liberty lit, when darkness seemed a foregone conclusion. Today, as ONE members and proud Americans, we can stand up in tough times to keep our commitments to rid the world of poverty and call on our political leaders to do the same.

David Lane, ONE.org
